2013 Fabulist Red Blend
Great wines, like great stories, evoke a detailed sense of place. That’s the Fabulist, our red Bordeaux-style blend that tells the story of our family’s vineyards, our passion for making wine, and our love of the Napa Valley. Crafted for pure enjoyment, this is a generous wine that reflects the beauty and bounty of the place we call home.
The 2013 Fabulist is a classic Bordeaux blend offering warm, inviting aromas of sun-ripened plum, blackberry and black currant laced with spicy notes of cinnamon and clove. The wine is both dense and vibrant, coating the palate like a soft glove with juicy, dark fruit flavors streaked with notes of espresso, vanilla and sandalwood. With silky, somewhat chalky tannins, this wine shows off its Rutherford pedigree in a package that is rich, layered and beautifully textured. Drink now through 2029.
There are two vineyard sources for Fabulist, both in the Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. Our Windfall Vineyard hosts just 2.2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 1.79 acres of Merlot on organically-farmed, rocky bale loam soils. The vines here are tightly spaced, creating competition for nutrients and lowering their overall production. The Komes Ranch, also in Rutherford, surrounds the home of John Komes and is the source of the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in this wine. Both vineyards are tended by hand with copious canopy management and culling to ensure low yields of beautifully rich and concentrated wine grapes.
One hundred percent handpicked and sorted, the grapes for this vintage were harvested in several passes as each variety reached optimal ripeness. Prior to fermentation the fruit was placed in small stainless steel tanks where the grapes underwent a "cold soak" for four days at a steady 55°F. This allowed the juice to extract much of its color without the influence of alcohol, resulting in a deep, dark ruby-purple hue. After fermentation the wine was aged for a period of 20 months in new and seasoned French oak barrels. Racked several times to soften the tannins through exposure to oxygen, the wine was bottled without fining. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc.
In Napa Valley a warm, dry spring in 2013 brought early bud break to the vines, with ideal growing conditions continuing through flowering and fruit set. Temperatures in June and July were consistently in the zone for optimal vine activity, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and ripening. At the conclusion of harvest, about two weeks earlier than normal, Napa Valley vintners agreed that 2013 had produced some of the most concentrated, dense and richly satisfying wines they’d ever seen.
"Shows a chewy tannin tension under the cool yet ripe fruit. Medium-to full-bodied, bright and fruity. Pretty finish. Better in 2019." Read more.
