2014 Twelve Days of Christmas
Behind the 12 Days…
Well great Lords a Leaping…our 12 Days of Christmas is a 12-bottle case of holiday happiness! The 12 different labels are inspired by that beloved English Christmas carol - you know the one that takes forever to sing? They were created for us by Raul Gonzalez III, the award winning artist and illustrator best known for his Lowriders in Space children’s book series. Nat Komes commissioned the art after spending an afternoon at the library reading them…to his kids of course.
What it tastes like to us…
The wine is mostly Cabernet with a soupçon of Malbec and Cabernet Franc – all from two vineyards in Rutherford – so it’s safe to say it’s a pretty bold and expressive wine. Also: flavors of blackberry, black currant, and blueberry; sweet notes of mocha, allspice, vanilla and sassafras. Enough acid to keep it lively on the palate, silky tannins, and a lasting finish with hints of black tea, dark licorice and cedar. A perfect match for French hens, turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree. Or is that sacrilege?
What Mother Nature delivered…
2014 was another stellar vintage in Napa Valley. Seriously. We’re not just saying that. Heavy rains in the winter when we wanted them… a warm, frost-free spring… and dry weather throughout the summer. What more could a grapevine want? An early harvest capped it all off. The wines tell the rest of the story.
What we did then…
We hand-picked the grapes, then fermented about ten percent in French oak barrels. It’s a fair bit of work doing it this way - gotta get out the cooperage tools to remove and replace the head of the barrel - but the soft-as-silk texture you get in the wine is worth it. The rest went the traditional route: fermented in stainless then aged in French oak for 20 months. Racked a few times to soften the tannins. Bottled without fining.
