2016 Honest Bucker
What it tastes like to us…
Like an honest bucker, this wine comes out of the chute the same way every time. No surprises, no tricks. Just a big mouthful of white wine goodness. Betcha can’t guess what’s in it, so we’ll let you in on the secret: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and – wait for it - Malvasia. An oddball grape, according to our winemaker, who knows it well. But it gives this wine its floral notes – honeysuckle, jasmine, gardenia – and a hint of lychee. The Sauv Blanc brings stone fruit – apricots, peaches – and maybe a note of evergreen. The Chard adds weight, a creamy richness that feels good on the palate. Honestly, this is a damn fine wine.
What Mother Nature delivered…
An early bud break set the stage, and the rest of the 2016 growing season fell like dominoes, from bloom, to berry set, to veraison and harvest. It was dry – boy was it ever – but late spring rains were just enough to keep the vine roots quenched. We could have used a little more fruit, but we sure couldn’t complain about the quality. Not a bad tradeoff.
What we did then…
Fermented the grapes in stainless steel then transferred the wine to concrete tanks and seasoned oak barrels; no new oak cause we didn’t want it squelching all that great fruit flavor. We let the wine chill for several months, then bottled it up. After a few good blending sessions that is…to get the proportions just right.
