2014 Skull Ring
What it tastes like to us...
An unconventional blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot brings it: Inky purple, dense aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, and incense. Plus mocha, roasted meat (hello Syrah), Provençal herbs and dark cocoa. Did we mention that this is a big wine? Oh yeah…voluptuously lush tannins and a generous mouthfeel. But still, it’s framed by an elegant structure…This is a rulebreaking wine, definitely not for sissies.
What Mother Nature delivered...
2014 was another stellar vintage in Napa Valley. Seriously. We’re not just saying that. Heavy rains in the winter when we wanted them… a warm, frost-free spring… and dry weather throughout the summer. What more could a grapevine want? An early harvest capped it all off. The wines tell the rest of the story.
What we did then...
Gave those grapes a good cold soak to squeeze out that inky color and flavor. Fermented in stainless steel, letting the Syrah macerate for an extra few days. Then into a combo of French and American oak barrels, where the wine aged for 20 months. We racked the wine several times, then bottled without fining.
