Jon Nathaniel Bodacious is a red wine blend from Napa Valley, a wine the Komes family of Flora Springs has made since 1984. The wine is named in honor of the famous rodeo bull, Bodacious, who was known in his lifetime as “The World’s Most Dangerous Bull.” Only six cowboys managed to ride Bodacious’ back for eight seconds or more. Sourced from the Komes’ estate vineyards in Napa Valley, Rutherford and Oakville, the 2016 Bodacious is a rollicking red blend that will take your palate for a wild ride.
Each lot of hand-picked grapes was sorted, crushed and quickly moved to stainless steel tanks where the fruit underwent a 4-day cold soak to extract color and flavor prior to fermentation. Post-fermentation the wine underwent extended maceration to further the extraction of color, tannin and flavor from the delicate skins. Once dry, the lots were placed in small, French and American oak barrels for a period of 19 months. We used a combination of new and seasoned barrels, carefully matching the tannin profile of the wine to the age of each barrel. The wine was assembled after a series of intense and lively tastings with much discussion to determine the final blend.
The 2016 growing season began with an early bud break followed by warm weather and welcome spring rains. From bloom, to fruit set, to veraison and harvest, nature cooperated offering a classic weather pattern of foggy mornings, warm, sunny days and cool evenings and nights. Harvest began in mid-August and wrapped up by mid-October, just ahead of the valley’s first significant fall rainstorm.
This bold red blend shows exuberant, lush fruit - juicy red cherry, black raspberry and cassis – along with rich notes of espresso, cola and dusty cocoa. The wine is full-bodied and plush with bright acidity and a solid backbone. The tannins are smooth and long lasting. Despite its namesake, our 2016 Bodacious is friendly and approachable, ideal for enjoying today with friends and family.
