2021 Lavender Hill Vineyard Chardonnay
Vineyard & Winemaking
We sourced our 2021 Lavender Hill Chardonnay from a cool-climate vineyard in southern Napa Valley, where morning fog and afternoon breezes blowing off San Pablo Bay help retain the fruit’s beautiful natural acidity. After hand sorting in the vineyard and again at the winery, the grapes were whole cluster pressed to immediately separate the juice from the skins. Forty percent of the juice was fermented in concrete vessels to maintain freshness and acidity, while the remaining sixty percent fermented in small French oak barrels. The barrel lot aged sur lies for 10 months in French oak and was stirred twice a month to suspend the yeast lees and release essential oils that add richness and viscosity. The wine went through 75% malolactic fermentation.
The 2021 growing season in Napa Valley was smooth and uneventful with a harvest that produced low yields of small grape clusters and berries. The season started off with very little rain and continued as a dry, sunny summer led to a relatively cool fall with weeks of lovely weather. The dry weather resulted in an average crop load on the vines, requiring less dropping of fruit. The resulting grapes were packed full of flavor and led to powerful, concentrated wines.
Our 2021 Lavender Hill Chardonnay opens with aromatic notes of guava, peach and Golden Delicious apple with accompanying hints of warm spice and toast. The wine’s creamy palate is broad and satisfying owing to twice-weekly lees stirring and 75% malolactic fermentation. In the mouth tropical fruit flavors are joined by notes of graham cracker, crème brûlée, cardamom and toasty oak. Ripe, generous and multi-layered, this full-bodied Chardonnay winds down with a long, mineral-laced finish.
