Vineyard

Our Lavender Hill Vineyard is one of the coolest sites in Napa Valley, located in the southern part of the Carneros AVA where breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay create an optimal climate for growing Pinot Noir. The grapes for our 2020 Pinot Noir came from three small blocks, less than 1.5 acres each, planted to three outstanding French clones: clone 38 from Dijon and clone 90 from Chambertin, plus the “suitcase” clone 828 (a clone smuggled into the U.S. from Dijon many years ago). These clones produce low yields of small clusters and berries, resulting in concentrated wines with intense aromatics and beautiful fruit characteristics.

Winemaking

After hand sorting in the vineyard and again at the winery, the grapes for our Lavender Hill Pinot Noir were gently crushed and transferred to small stainless steel tanks where the fruit underwent a four-day cold soak. Following fermentation, one hundred percent of the wine aged for 18 months in small French oak barrels from the Burgundian barrel cooper, François Frères. We used both new and seasoned barrels to avoid overwhelming the delicate Pinot Noir fruit.

Vintage

The 2020 growing season began with a warm, dry winter that gave way to a mild spring season with no appreciable frost events. Summer brought cool mornings and warm, sunny afternoons, and as harvest approached the vintage appeared to be spectacular. Unfortunately, two wildfires in Napa Valley in August and September/October dashed those hopes, as smoke blanketed the valley floor. But because our Lavender Hill Vineyard was far from the epicenter of both fires, we were able to harvest a small amount of fruit that was not exposed to smoke; by carefully sorting, we made a small amount of this Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Lavender Hill Pinot Noir is fresh and juicy with notes of red plum, ripe cherry and crisp pomegranate. Medium-bodied and with good balancing acidity, the wine has underpinnings of mint, tobacco, spice and violets. This is a lightly oaked Pinot Noir, with fine-grained tannins and a long, satisfying finish. Its structure will easily reward ten years of aging.
