"If you have a dream, I mean a real good dream, follow it." - Evel Knievel
What it tastes like to us...
This wine’s a daredevil, just like the stuntman who inspired it, Evel Knievel. That 60s and 70s hot dog wasn’t afraid of anything, and when you drink this Merlot from our Windfall Vineyard, you won’t be either. But you will taste wild blackberry, cranberry, dark Bing cherry; fresh-baked pie, licorice and overtones of sage and blonde tobacco. Substantial and highly-structured…you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a Cab. It’s a bold wine, like Evel "REWILD" Knievel himself. You can drink it now or hold it for later. Just stay away from the Grand Canyon.
What Mother Nature delivered...
You know us wine types, always comparing one vintage to another. So yeah, while 2012 was pretty darn good, 2013 may have been even better. Warm, dry spring…early bud break...ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. Nice moderate summer. There was that one heat spike, but it didn’t amount to much. Harvest was early, about two weeks earlier than other Napa Valley harvests of the last decade (told you we can’t resist comparisons). Bottom line: high fives all around for the ’13 vintage!
What we did then…
The usual stuff...hand harvested and sorted the grapes and fermented in stainless steel after a four-day cold soak. Next up: French oak barrels, where the wine aged for 21 months. We racked the wine several times to soften the tannins by exposing it to oxygen. That’s about it. The wine was bottled without fining.
About the artist...
