Every family has one – the raconteur who captivates his or her listeners with tales of family lore, the one who extends the dinner conversation long after dessert has been served. In the Komes family, that person is John Komes, our own fabulist, a man of legendary storytelling ability who has kept us enthralled for decades. Fabulist is a tribute to him.
The 2017 Fabulist is sourced from Jon Nathaniel’s estate vineyards in the Oakville, Rutherford and St. Helena appellations of Napa Valley. Situated in the heart of Napa Valley, these low-yielding valley floor vineyards enjoy warm, sunny climates, cool evenings and well-drained, rocky/loam soils that are low in fertility. We tend these vineyards by hand with copious canopy management and fruit culling to ensure small yields of beautifully rich and concentrated wine grapes. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this wine were hand-picked.
After arriving at the winery the grapes were cold soaked for four days to extract color, flavor and tannin, and then placed in stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Once dry, the wine aged for 22 months in small oak barrels – 92% French and 8% American. It was bottled without fining.
2017 brought a rainy winter, enough to end a five year drought in California. The weather in spring and early summer was mild, with just a few summer heat spikes. A heat wave over Labor Day weekend hastened picking during the first two weeks of September, with cooler temperatures arriving in mid-September to give our Cabernet Sauvignon extra time on the vine.
The Jon Nathaniel 2017 Fabulist is a gorgeous 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, inky purple and opaque, with exquisite flavors of perfectly ripe black and blue fruit – blackberry, blueberry and dark plum. Supple and seductive, the wine shows secondary notes of mocha, espresso, sandalwood and violet. This is a rich, concentrated full-bodied wine, a hefty Napa Cab with polished tannins and a finish that won’t give up. It will age beautifully for 15 or more years
